Montenegro’s new government headed by Prime Minister Igor Luksic was inaugurated in the Parliament today, December 29, by a majority vote of 46 to 25, with 2 abstentions.

Prime Minister Luksic has made extensive changes in the government structure. Five new ministers have been introduced into the Cabinet, the Ministry for European Integration has been merged with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a new Ministry of Science established to advance Montenegro’s research and development capabilities.

The new government will remain committed to Montenegro’s top foreign policy goals: EU and NATO membership.

In his keynote address on Tuesday, Mr. Luksic outlined an action plan that will build upon the successes of his predecessor, former Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, while pursuing new initiatives aimed at enhancing the rule of law and moving Montenegro into a new era of prosperity.

He pledged, in particular, to undertake significant economic and structural reforms, ensure fiscal and financial stability and overhaul business regulations.

Mr. Luksic, 34, is Montenegro’s third prime minister since the country regained independence in 2006.
