MONTENEGRO: AT LEAST 44 KILLED IN RAILWAY DISASTER

Podgorica, 24 Jan. (AKI) - At least 44 people have been killed and close to 200 injured in the worst railway disaster in the history of Montenegro, the director of Podgorica Clinical center Miodrag Djurovic said on Tuesday. The disaster took place late Monday afternoon, when a passenger train lost control and plunged into the Moraca River canyon, some 20 kilometers north of Podgorica. After visiting the scene of the disaster, Montenegro president Filip Vujanovic ordered the Ministry of Transport and Railway Management to launch an inquiry into what happened.

Surviving passengers have suggested that the breaking system may have failed, describing how the train suddenly accelerated, derailed and plunged into the 50-metre deep canyon. Railway director Ranko Medenica submitted his resignation on Monday night, while rescue teams were pulling survivors and bodies out of the wreckage and the freezing river.

Djurovic said he feared that the death toll wasnt final, because 50 people have been hospitalised with serious injuries. He added that among the injured were 75 children bellow the age of 16.

The tragedy for a moment thawed relations between Djukanovic, who plans to hold a referendum on independence in April, and Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, who favors continuation of the state union between Serbia and Montenegro. Djukanovic said he spoke several times with Kostunica, who offered help, and Serbian government was to hold a special session to discuss help for the sister republic.
