ANKARA - Turkey decided to recognize Montenegro (which parted from Serbia after a referendum) as an independent state and launch initiatives to establish diplomatic ties.
Turkish Foreign Ministry stated on Monday, "Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul noted that Turkey decided to recognize Republic of Montenegro and launch required initiatives for diplomatic ties in response to the letter of Miodrag Vlahovic, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, who expressed their expectation (from Turkey) to recognize Republic of Montenegro as well as to establish diplomatic relations."

The Ministry stated, "Turkey wishes a future full of peace and prosperity for the people of Montenegro. We will exert necessary efforts to develop cooperation with Montenegro within the scope of friendly relations."

Montenegro held a referendum on May 21st, 2006, and decided to be independent from Serbia. Montenegro Parliament approved the result of referendum on June 3rd, 2006, and declared sovereign and independent Republic of Montenegro. Turkey is among the first governments to recognize Montenegro, along with the EU, Iceland, Croatia, Russia and Switzerland.
