The Japanese government on Friday recognized Montenegro as an independent state.

Following the decision, the government will send Akiko Yamanaka, parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs, to the Balkan republic as a special envoy of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

During her two-day stay there from Wednesday, Yamanaka will meet with Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and other officials of the Montenegro government.

Montenegro declared independence June 3 following a May 21 referendum, in which a majority of voters supported its split-off from the union of Serbia-Montenegro, which was formed in 2003.

More than 10 countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China, have already recognized Montenegro as an independent state. (Jiji Press)
