Finland's prime minister said Friday that his country supports Montenegro's ambition to join the European Union.

Matti Vanhanen, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating presidency, said the 25-nation bloc expects to see other Balkan nations join the EU.

"There is a clear understanding within the EU that all Western Balkan nations will eventually become members," Vanhanen told reporters.

Vanhanen was speaking at a joint news conference with the prime minister of Montenegro, which became independent from Serbia three months ago.

Milo Djukanovic of Montenegro arrived in Helsinki earlier Friday for talks on his country's relations with the EU and the negotiations over Kosovo's postwar status.

Djukanovic said EU membership was a foreign policy priority for his tiny nation of 620,000 people.
