I welcome the peaceful and orderly conduct of yesterday's parliamentary elections in Montenegro, as confirmed by the election observation mission of OSCE-ODIHR.

While there have not been any major problems in the conduct of the elections, I expect Montenegro to address all pending issues including legal inconsistencies in the legislative framework for the elections in line with the recommendations of OSCE-ODIHR.

The Commission takes note of the preliminary election results which show the victory of the Coalition for a European Montenegro and expects that a new government will be swiftly formed.

I trust the new government will pursue the country's reform agenda and its progress towards the EU. There exists a strong consensus on European integration which is one of the country's assets on its path to the EU. The new government should continue working with the opposition to maintain and even further strengthen this consensus. Montenegro can become a positive benchmark in the region and advance towards the EU provided that the reform momentum is maintained and Montenegro continues to build a solid track-record of implementation of its SAA/IA obligations.
