Montenegro and Japan set to enhance bilateral cooperation

Podgorica, Montenegro (28 January 2014) – Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Igor Lukšić met with newly appointed Japanese Ambassador to Montenegro Masafumi Kuroku.

The two countries have established good and friendly relations, the two officials noted, adding there is considerable scope for expanding bilateral cooperation in all fields of mutual interest. It was also agreed that the appointment of Montenegro’s non-resident Ambassador to Japan will contribute to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Deputy Prime Minister Lukšić and Ambassador Kuroku particularly emphasised the significance of economic cooperation and presence of Japanese investors in Montenegro, and discussed possibilities for expanding cooperation through organising a joint business forum.

Ambassador Kuroki praised Montenegro efforts and achievements on its European and Euro-Atlantic path, noting that the Government of Japan will continue supporting its further development through bilateral and development assistance programmes.

DPM Lukšić said that the Montenegrin Government appreciates Japanese current development assistance programmes, especially those being implemented by Japan International Cooperation Agency for training government officials and private sector development.

The meeting concluded there is room for strengthening cooperation in the fields of information technology and telecommunications, and in exchange of experience and participation in joint programmes related to culture, education and science.
