The Ministry of Sports was established by the Regulation Amending the Regulation on Public Administration Organisation and Operation, which the Government of Montenegro adopted on Friday, 25 November 2016.

The regulation stipulates that the Ministry of Sports shall adopt the act on internal organisation and systematisation within 40 days from the date of the regulation's entry into force. The regulation also provides for that the Ministry of Sports will take over the civil servants who have performed tasks which now fall within the scope of the Ministry, as well as the equipment and official documentation, from the Directorate for Youth and Sports.

Until the web page of the Ministry of Sports is completely put into operation and the contents falling within the scope of the Ministry are moved to a new page, the contents falling within the scope of the Ministry can be found on the web page of the former Directorate for Youth and Sports (http://www.upravazamladeisport.me).
