Kotor Fortress listed on UNESCO World Heritage List
The transnational, serial nomination of Venetian
fortifications from the 16th to the 17th centuries, which was nominated for the
entry of three countries: Italy, Croatia and Montenegro, was accepted today at
the 41st Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which is being held in
Krakow from 2 to 12 July.
Within the serial nomination of the 15 nominated components
of the Venetian defence system, six are listed: the fortified cities of
Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda and Palmanova from Italy, the defence system of
Zadar and St. Nicholas fortress in Šibenik, from Croatia, and the Kotor
fortress from Montenegro. In its Decision, the Committee also makes it possible
for the Forte Mare Fortress in Herceg Novi to be added to the registered good
after receiving appropriate studies and conservation measures.
In addition to Herceg Novi, for which the procedure for
fulfilling the requirements in accordance with ICOMOS recommendation will be
launched soon in order to be connected to this entry in the following period,
Montenegro was also a candidate for Ulcinj. The findings of the UNESCO experts
indicate that the Venetian layer in Ulcinj is not persevered to the extent that
it confirms the authenticity and integrity. However, as tis cultural good has
undeniable cultural values that indicate the complexity of cultural influences
that left a trace in Ulcinj, its status will be the subject of special
attention in cooperation between the Municipality of Ulcinj and the Ministry of
Culture.
At the 41st Session of the UNESCO WORLD Heritage Committee
in Krakow, Montenegro was represented by Dragica Ponorac, Ambassador of
Montenegro to France and permanent representative of our country at UNESCO,
Aleksandar Dajković, Director General of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage,
Ilija Lalošević, contact person for the implementation of the World Heritage
Convention and Milica Nikolić, Secretary General of the National Commission for
UNESCO of Montenegro.
