• Montenegrin Prime Minister becomes first head of government to endorse REKOM Initiative efforts at finding facts about wartime atrocities in former Yugoslavia
• REKOM Initiative launches region’s biggest NGO campaign ever, dubbed ‘Million Signatures for REKOM’, in an attempt to build public support for their mission
Podgorica, Montenegro (28 April, 2011) -- Prime Minister Igor Lukšić signed a petition for the establishment of REKOM, a regional fact-finding commission for war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia, as a token of his support for civil society efforts to seek and tell the truth about wartime atrocities.
By signing the petition entitled ‘Million Signatures for REKOM’, PM Lukšić endorsed the biggest yet NGO campaign in the region, which brings together more than 1,500 organisations and prominent individuals from all over the region.
“I strongly believe that facing the past is the best policy for the future, which is why I have decided to back this initiative,” said Lukšić, who is the first head of state to endorse the REKOM Initiative.
Years after the end of conflicts in the region, none of the former Yugoslav republics have been able to produce a complete list of victims and more than 15,000 people are still registered as missing.
