"The Montenegrin electoral register is a high-quality, up-to-date and accurate database in line with the highest international standards. We are doing everything transparently because we want to create conditions on which citizens will be able to elect their representatives in free elections, in an atmosphere of democratic tolerance, peace and respect for the rule of law," Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodžić said at a meeting with resident ambassadors in Montenegro, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union and representatives of international organisations.

On this occasion, the Minister stressed that a significant part of the reform activities carried out by the Ministry of the Interior contributes to the improvement of the electoral process, which, in the part of the political criteria, is one of the conditions for accession to the European Union. "It is the responsibility towards citizens, according to the voters, that made us work intensively to improve the legal framework that will allow citizens to have full confidence in the electoral process in Montenegro as a future EU Member State. Our task - both of the authorities and the opposition and of the civilian sector and the media - is to further strengthen citizens' confidence in the institutions and integrity of the electoral system. And we should all be committed to that goal," Nuhodžić said. He added that the Ministry of the Interior formed a team tasked to monitor, direct and organise the implementation of obligations arising from the election laws.

In the context of meeting the recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR Observation Missions, the Minister specifically indicated that, since the Committee on Comprehensive Reform of Election and Other Legislation began its work, members of the governing coalition, with the technical assistance of international organisations, the civil sector and the academic community, have shown a willingness to improve election legislation. As a result of the work of the Committee, legal decisions were made: the Law on Amendments to the Law on Electoral Register, the Law on Territorial Organisation, the Law on Financing Political Entities and Election Campaigns, and the Law on Amendments to the Criminal Code, and implementation of these laws is crucial.

Nuhodžić expressed special gratitude to the European Commission, the OSCE Mission and the ODIHR for providing expert support while working on electoral law reform. He announced that, recognising the contribution of the civil sector and the media to the creation of a democratic environment for holding elections, the Ministry of the Interior would organise meetings with both non-governmental organisations and the media to discuss openly all issues relevant to the electoral process under the jurisdiction of this Ministry.
