DPM Ivanović: European Commission’s support confirms Montenegro’s leading role in the enlargement process

Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović commented on the address by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, delivered before the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. In her statement, Commissioner Kos expressed clear support for Montenegro’s goal to close all negotiation chapters by the end of 2026.

In a post on the social media platform X, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović emphasized that the frequent confirmations from Brussels serve as the most compelling response to repeated attempts to fuel skepticism and defeatism among the domestic public regarding Montenegro’s EU accession.

He stated that the Government’s full commitment to the reform agenda, combined with the clear and principled support of the European Commission, has resulted in the most successful phase of Montenegro’s EU integration to date. This, he noted, provides a solid foundation for even greater progress over the next 18 months.

Referring to today’s remarks by Commissioner Kos, Ivanović reiterated that Montenegro’s objective to conclude the negotiation process by the end of 2026 is ambitious but achievable—and fully backed by the European Commission. With the current pace of reforms and continued fulfillment of obligations, Montenegro has a genuine opportunity to become the next member state of the European Union.
