Workshop Advances Montenegro's National Policy Framework for Alternative Fuels Infrastructure

The Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Energy and Mining organised a workshop on the National Policy Framework for Alternative Fuels Infrastructure, held at Europe House in Podgorica, as part of the process of preparing Montenegro’s first National Policy Framework for Alternative Fuels Infrastructure. The workshop was implemented within the project “Technical Assistance for Capacity Building and Improved Legal Harmonisation, Performance and Efficiency within the Transport Sector in Montenegro”, funded by the European Union.

Božidar Savović, State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport, said the event represents an important step in aligning Montenegro’s transport system with European energy transition goals, noting that the aim is to integrate the national transport network with European corridors, adopt high standards and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Matija Medojević, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy and Mining, emphasised that the development of alternative fuels infrastructure demonstrates how closely interconnected the energy and transport sectors are today, while Kai Nigel, Programme Manager at the EU Delegation to Montenegro, assessed that the draft National Policy Framework represents an important opportunity for Montenegro to advance its transport and energy systems in line with European standards.

During the presentation “Montenegro’s Transition Towards Alternative Fuels Infrastructure”, Mette Hoé, EU expert in strategic transport and urban planning and author of the underlying study, stated that developing alternative fuels infrastructure in Montenegro requires cooperation between institutions, local self-government, the energy sector and the market, and stressed the importance of addressing all modes of transport, not only road transport.

Through three thematic sessions, participants discussed key aspects of developing alternative fuels infrastructure, joint planning between the transport and energy sectors, aligning infrastructure development with the needs of transport operators and businesses, and financing and institutional coordination for the development of e-mobility.

The conclusions of the workshop will represent an important contribution to the further preparation of the National Policy Framework, with the aim of ensuring that future solutions are aligned with national priorities, market needs and European standards in the transport and energy sectors.

The workshop is implemented within the project “Technical Assistance for Capacity Building and Improved Legal Harmonisation, Performance and Efficiency within the Transport Sector in Montenegro”, funded by the European Union.

The project is implemented by a consortium led by DAI Global Belgium, in partnership with GIZ and ENOVA.
