Bečić: UK sanctions signal strong determination in global fight against organized crime

The sanctions announced today by the Government of the United Kingdom mark a significant first step in a new global framework aimed at combating illegal migration and human smuggling networks. Among those sanctioned are individuals and organizations linked to criminal groups operating in the Western Balkans, including members of the so-called Kavač and Škaljari clans. These measures reaffirm that the international community is actively identifying and targeting organized criminal networks that have, for years, operated from our country—undermining the rule of law and threatening the security of Montenegro and beyond.

We welcome the action taken by the UK Government as a strong signal of determination in the global fight against organized crime. The move to sanction transnational criminal groups represents a significant advancement in our joint efforts to dismantle long-standing structures that have destabilized states across Europe and the Western Balkans, including Montenegro.

Our cooperation continues to focus on dismantling criminal organizations such as the so-called Kavač and Škaljari clans, which have long been synonymous with violence, drug and human trafficking, and corruption. Montenegro and the United Kingdom remain committed partners in disrupting these networks and safeguarding our citizens and institutions.

This decision underscores that no one is beyond the reach of justice and that the international community stands united in confronting borderless crime. Montenegro remains firmly committed to deepening its security, legal, and institutional cooperation with its international partners.
