DPM Bečić congratulates 23 January – Day of Journalists of Montenegro

Dear journalists of Montenegro,
On behalf of the Government of Montenegro and in my personal capacity, I extend my congratulations on the occasion of 23 January – Day of Journalists of Montenegro.
Journalism is not merely a profession. It is a public service of the highest state and social importance. Free and responsible media represent the foundation of the democratic order, an indispensable mechanism of oversight over government, and a key ally in safeguarding the rule of law.
At a time when Montenegro is decisively confronting the legacy of organized crime, systemic corruption, and the abuse of state resources, the role of the media becomes strategic. The fight for state security and public trust is not conducted solely within the institutions of the security sector, but also in the public sphere – through truth, facts, and responsible reporting. Compromises with crime and corruption are unacceptable, both for the state and for the media.
Montenegrin journalism also carries a distinct historical and moral dimension. At its foundation stands the sacrifice of Duško Jovanović, whose name permanently obliges the state to ensure that truth is stronger than fear, and justice above all interests. His fate serves as a reminder that media freedom has never been granted – it has been dearly paid for.
Therefore, the obligation of the state is sacred and unequivocal: that no journalist in Montenegro should ever again be endangered because of their work; that every attack be fully investigated; and that every attempt at pressure or intimidation be resolutely sanctioned.
Convinced that there can be no secure state without free media, nor a truly democratic Montenegro, I once again express my respect and gratitude for your responsibility, courage, and perseverance in performing your duties.
