DPM Bečić congratulates Montenegro’s Statehood Day

I extend my warmest congratulations to all citizens of Montenegro on 13 July – Statehood Day, the brightest date in our history and a symbol of freedom, statehood, dignity and the unwavering spirit of the Montenegrin people.

Thirteenth July carries within it two great historical legacies. On this day 148 years ago, at the Congress of Berlin, Montenegro gained international recognition and confirmed its place among the free and sovereign states of Europe. Sixty-three years later, on 13 July 1941, our people launched the first nationwide uprising against fascism in occupied Europe, demonstrating that freedom is not given as a gift, but won through courage, sacrifice and an unwavering belief in justice.

This unbroken thread of the struggle for freedom, from our ancestors to today’s generations, obliges us to build a state worthy of their sacrifice. Therefore, Montenegro’s European path is not merely a foreign policy objective, but a natural continuation of our country’s historic commitment to belonging to the space of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and shared European values.

I am confident that we will soon reach the crowning achievement of this historic journey – Montenegro’s membership in the European Union. This will not be the success of a single generation or a single government, but the fulfilment of the aspirations of many generations that fought for our country to be free, respected and equal among European nations.

At the same time, it is our duty to continue the decisive fight against organised crime and corruption, strengthen institutions, develop the economy, create new jobs and ensure a dignified life for every person. Only a strong, fair and economically developed Montenegro can be the best legacy for future generations.

May 13 July always remind us that freedom is the greatest value a nation can have, but also the greatest responsibility it must preserve. With the wish that this great holiday continues to unite all citizens around the values that connect us, I once again extend my heartfelt congratulations on Montenegro’s Statehood Day.

Long live freedom, long live Europe, long live Montenegro!
