Ibrahimović at reception in Brussels: Montenegro confidently moves toward its European future

On the occasion of the anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro’s independence and ahead of Statehood Day, the Embassy of Montenegro in the Kingdom of Belgium hosted a formal reception in Brussels, attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović.
Addressing the guests, Ibrahimović said that the 20th anniversary of the restoration of independence and Statehood Day are an opportunity to honour the historical continuity of Montenegrin statehood, its tradition of freedom, and the values on which Montenegro is building its European future.
Speaking about the historical significance of 13 July, he stressed that the date unites Montenegro’s international recognition at the Berlin Congress in 1878 and the first mass anti-fascist uprising in Europe in 1941, noting that both events reflect Montenegro’s enduring commitment to freedom, dignity, and the right to independently decide its future.
Two historical moments brought together in a single date carry one lasting message: that the continuity of Montenegrin statehood is measured by the ability of its people to choose their future, preserve their dignity, and always stand on the right side of history, Ibrahimović said.
The Minister noted that the restoration of independence in 2006 represented a democratic confirmation of Montenegro’s state continuity, while NATO membership further strengthened its position as a reliable ally and responsible member of the international community.
Speaking about European integration, he recalled that Montenegro is working intensively to close accession chapters by the end of this year, with the goal of becoming the next full member of the European Union by 2028.
Reflecting on relations between Montenegro and Belgium, Ibrahimović underlined that the two countries share a commitment to freedom, democracy, international law, and European values. He also highlighted the importance of long-standing bilateral ties and Belgium’s continued support for Montenegro’s EU path, reaffirmed during the recent visit of Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot to Montenegro.
Ibrahimović also expressed special gratitude to the Montenegrin diaspora, noting that it carries Montenegro through its work, achievements, and dignity.
You make our voice stronger, our presence warmer, and the ties between Montenegro and Belgium more human and more lasting, Ibrahimović said.
