Ibrahimović: Global Alliance a unique platform for strengthening the international human rights system

Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović participated today in New York, on the margins of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, in a high-level meeting dedicated to the Global Alliance for Human Rights.

Ibrahimović stressed that the international human rights system is facing serious challenges and that, in such circumstances, it is essential to further strengthen joint efforts to protect, promote and ensure the enjoyment of human rights.

He recalled that Montenegro has supported the initiative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to establish the Global Alliance, which he also announced during the High-Level Segment of the Human Rights Council in February this year.

Speaking about the significance of the new initiative, Ibrahimović said that the Alliance has the potential to become an effective platform for exchanging experiences and good practices, supporting the implementation of international obligations and strengthening the universality of human rights, particularly by bringing together different stakeholders at the national, regional and global levels.

He underlined Montenegro’s commitment to advancing equality, combating discrimination and strengthening the protection of vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls, as well as creating an enabling environment for the independent work of human rights defenders, journalists and civil society organisations.

“The Global Alliance should serve as a platform not only for dialogue, but also for concrete action that brings about tangible improvements in people’s lives,” Ibrahimović said.

The meeting was opened by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and Prime Minister of the Netherlands Rob Jetten.
