Ivanović: Montenegro and Armenia bound by genuine friendship and shared values

On the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia, Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović delivered a speech at the reception. On that occasion, on behalf of the Government of Montenegro and in his own name, he extended his sincere congratulations to the leadership and people of Armenia, wishing them peace, stability and prosperity.

Recalling that Armenia is a country of ancient civilisation and a rich history, which has preserved its identity, language and faith through centuries of challenges, Ivanović stressed that independence is not merely a legal act, but also a lasting responsibility towards the state, its citizens and future generations, requiring strong institutions, democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights.

He particularly welcomed Armenia’s efforts towards democratic reforms and the deepening of its relations with the European Union, stressing that Montenegro, as the country that has advanced furthest in the EU accession process, is ready to share its experience and expertise with Armenia in the areas of reforms and alignment with European standards.

Referring to bilateral relations, Ivanović assessed that Montenegro and Armenia are bound by genuine friendship and that there is a strong mutual interest in further strengthening them. He particularly pointed to opportunities for more concrete cooperation in the areas of economy and trade, tourism, information technology and innovation, education, culture, healthcare, parliamentary diplomacy and decentralised cooperation, including further strengthening ties between Podgorica and Yerevan.

Against the backdrop of global challenges, Ivanović reiterated Montenegro’s support for dialogue, the normalisation of relations and efforts aimed at achieving lasting, comprehensive and sustainable peace in the South Caucasus, stressing that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but also requires trust, stability, development and prospects for younger generations.

Finally, he expressed support for Armenia’s European orientation and wished the Armenian people security and prosperity, emphasising that Montenegro will continue to contribute to the development of friendly relations and concrete cooperation between the two countries.
