Over the past few days, the Parliament of Montenegro has adopted three comprehensive pieces of legislation introducing a number of important reforms, including significant new measures that directly affect young people and children.

Among other provisions, the new legislation raises the minimum age for obtaining a firearms licence from 18 to 21, introduces stricter rules on the storage and safekeeping of firearms, bans the sale and use of firecrackers, prohibits the use of electric scooters by persons under the age of 16, and introduces the category of young drivers (aged 18–21). Young drivers will be prohibited from operating vehicles with an engine output exceeding 80 kW unless accompanied by a person who has held a valid driving licence for at least five years. They will also be prohibited from driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m.

These legislative measures, drafted by the Ministry of the Interior, were adopted with the aim of protecting our children and young people - our future.

Unlike their parents, they may not always understand the reasons behind these measures, but one day they will surely be grateful, because protecting and preserving the lives and health of all citizens - especially our young people - is one of the highest duties of every responsible member of society.
