Signing of confirmation on handover of solar street lights project in Cetinje and Kotor municipalities financed under donation from Chinese government

Podgorica, Montenegro (25 July 2016) -- Deputy Prime Minister Vujica Lazović and Ambassador of China to Montenegro Cui Zhiwei will sign the confirmation on the handover of the solar street lights project in Cetinje and Kotor municipalities financed under a donation from the Chinese Government. The signing ceremony will take place at the Government's Press Centre, on 26 July 2016, at 10:30. Following the ceremony, the two officials will hold a press conference.

In line with the letter the Montenegrin and Chinese governments exchanged on 11 March 2013, the Chinese side made a commitment to implement the solar street light project in the Old Royal Capital of Cetinje and Municipality of Kotor. Implementation of the project started in May 2015 and was completed in January 2016.

The value of the Chinese donation is EUR 3.6 million. New solar street lighs offer Cetinje and Kotor significant savings in power consumption and positioned them as the first local governments in Montenegro, which  implemented an energy efficiency street lighting project.

The basic working principle means that the photovoltaic PV module, located at the top of the lighting column, converts solar radiation into electrical energy, which is accumulated in the battery. The project implies an utilisation of the existing infrastructure, which means that it is not necessary to excavate streets and lay electric cables. Installation and maintenance are easy, and the street lighting is not compromised when a voltage drops or power fails.

This confirmation means that the Chinese side is officially handing over the  project and will guarantee the project's implementation over the next 24 months
