At the panel discussion on behalf of the Ministry for Human Rights and Minority Rights, spoke Head of Gender Equality, Biljana Pejovic. Ms. Pejovic pointed out that the priority objective of the Montenegrin Government is to affirm values protected by international legal standards, in particular human rights and freedoms and the fight against discrimination. She added that human rights defenders are faced with specific risks and are often targets because of their work in the field of human rights, so they need special and greater protection at the local, national and international level.

-As human rights defenders, apart from the institutions, I see non-governmental organizations and individuals, above all, because they play a vital role in democratic societies. Also, the active engagement of persons, groups, organizations and institutions is essential to ensure a steady progress towards the fulfillment of international human rights law, Pejovic emphasized. She added that human rights defenders act individually or together with others in order to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms and struggle for their protection and achievement at the local, national, regional and international level.

The event was organized in cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations System of Montenegro and the Faculty of Law of the University of Montenegro within the framework of a joint initiative of the Government of Montenegro and the UN System in a country that promotes the importance of respecting human rights through a series of events, marking 70 years since the adoption of Universal human rights declaration.
