Prime Minister meets with Ambassador Popa: Montenegro makes great strides, it is time for new phase in negotiations

Podgorica, Montenegro (24 September 2020) -- Montenegro has made great strides in European integration, opened all negotiation chapters and a time is coming when, together with the EU, it can work on intensifying the next phase of negotiations, said Prime Minister Duško Marković at the meeting with the newly appointed Head of EU Delegation to Montenegro Ambassador Oana Christina Popa.

"Now we have a good foundation and greater level of institutional competencies. Montenegro is on the good path," said Prime Minister Marković. 

He thanked the EU for its continuous support in reforms and transformation of Montenegrin society, and expressed particular gratitude for generous support during the coronavirus pandemic. "Support of EUR 53 million in non-refundable funds is great aid, but also a symbol of friendship and partnership."

Ambassador Popa highlighted that the European Union believes that the Western Balkans belongs to the EU. She assessed that in following period it is important to focus on two key priorities – overcoming the crises caused by COVID – 19 and work on the European integration, with particular emphasis on fulfillment of benchmarks in Chapters 23 and 24, in order to start closing of the remaining negotiation chapters.

Addressing both of these priorities, Ambassador Popa pointed to the importance of functional public administration and ensuring continuity of action. 

Both sides agreed on the importance of improving the infrastructure in order to ensure better connectivity of the region. The Ambassador specified that the EU is working on the economic and investment plan for the Western Balkans, and the focus is on transport and energy, as well as digital transformation. 

Prime Minister Marković and Ambassador Popa exchanged opinions on regional cooperation and regional economic integration.
