Celebration of Montenegro’s independence restoration anniversary held in Luxembourg

Spajić calls for unity: Being Prime Minister means leaving behind achievements future generations will celebrate

During his visit to Luxembourg, where Montenegro closed two additional negotiating chapters with the European Union at the Intergovernmental Conference, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić attended a reception marking the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro’s independence.

Addressing members of the Montenegrin diaspora, officials of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and representatives of the diplomatic corps, Prime Minister Spajić said that two decades ago the citizens of Montenegro had made a visionary decision to restore the country’s independence, guided by a belief in a future founded on responsibility and European values.

He stated that the event was not only a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s restored independence, but also a tribute to all those who had contributed over the past two decades to honouring that historic achievement and advancing the country’s bright European future.

Spajić noted that a person may leave their homeland without ever truly leaving it behind. He said that love and loyalty find their fullest meaning when distance strengthens bonds rather than weakens them. The Prime Minister added that he firmly believes in the loyalty and commitment demonstrated by the diaspora both to Montenegro and to Luxembourg, the country that welcomed them and has become home to their families.

He told attendees that what the Montenegrin community represents to Luxembourg today reflects what Montenegro will one day represent to the European Union.

Speaking about public service, Spajić said that being Prime Minister is not merely a matter of pursuing a political agenda. Rather, it is driven by a desire to leave future generations achievements that they will one day celebrate. He added that it is also about creating the conditions that will transform the reasons why previous generations left Montenegro into reasons for future generations to return.

The Prime Minister concluded by calling for unity, expressing confidence that collective effort and solidarity would provide the strength needed to achieve Montenegro’s strategic goals. He voiced hope that, two years from now, citizens would gather once again to celebrate Montenegro’s membership in the European Union.

The event was opened by Ambassador Olivera Injac. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović also addressed the audience.

The celebration was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Filip Ivanović, Ministers Naida Nišić and Maida Gorčević, as well as Minister of Diaspora Mirsad Azemović.
