DPM Bečić extends congratulations on International Roma Day

On the occasion of 8 April, International Roma Day, I would like to extend sincere congratulations to all members of the Roma community in Montenegro.

International Roma Day, which celebrates Roma history, language, and culture, provides us with an opportunity to reflect on how much the Roma community contributes to the diversity and cultural richness of Montenegro.

However, this day also provides an opportunity to focus on the discrimination and socio-economic isolation that Roma people continue to face, despite international regulations and national laws against discrimination.

Montenegro, as a multi-ethnic and civic society, has a responsibility to unequivocally protect the rights of all minority communities. For this reason, I would like to emphasise that it is the responsibility of the entire society to create an environment in which the rights and freedoms of all individuals are equally respected, and where everyone has equal opportunities for education, healthcare, social protection, fair work, and dignified living. I am confident that Montenegro has the capacity to set an example of building a truly civic society and protecting the basic tenets of democracy by accepting all diversities and supporting marginalized groups.

The Government of Montenegro will continue to build a society of equal opportunities through the implementation of inclusive policies, to facilitate the integration of the Roma population, as well as all other ethnic minorities, into the education system and participation in all spheres of social life.

Deeply convinced that in the years ahead we will witness an improvement in the position of Roma people in the development of our social community, I once again extend my congratulations on International Roma Day to all members of the Roma community.
