Dritan Abazović

Prime Minister of Montenegro

Dritan Abazović is a political scientist and author of two books: "Cosmopolitan Culture and Global Justice" and "A Critique of Global Ethics”. In his career so far, he has published a dozen scientific papers in domestic and international journals, mainly in the field of political philosophy and international relations. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Freedom of Faith & Security in Europe (IFFSE), and a member of The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). Mr. Abazović received many awards and recognitions, and has an honorary doctorate for the contribution to multiculturalism.

Dritan Abazović was born December 25th 1985, in Ulcinj - Montenegro, where he finished primary and secondary school. During high school years, he founded a youth group of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, whose focus was on reconciling young people in the post-conflict areas of the former Yugoslavia. In 2004, Abazović enrolled at the Faculty of Political Sciences at the University of Sarajevo. He acquired the title of graduate political scientist in record time, completing a four-year faculty in just two years and seven months. He was the best student of the generation, and the winner of the Golden Badge and the Golden Charter of the University of Sarajevo. He enrolled in master's studies in 2007, at the University of Montenegro, majoring in International Relations at the Faculty of Political Sciences. He defended his doctoral dissertation in the field of Political Theory, entitled "Global Politics - Ethical Aspects of Globalization" in 2019 at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo.

As a scholarship holder of Norwegian organizations, he studied at the University of Oslo, where he completed "Peace Research". In addition, he has participated in professional programs in America, Austria, Belgium, Slovenia, Spain and Luxembourg. He has been a lecturer at numerous scientific conferences and panelist at prestigious universities: Institute of Technology MSU Ilgan Philippines, Bilgi University Istanbul, University of Montenegro, Diplomatic Academy in Vienna etc. Also, he was a lecturer at the London School of Economics (LSE) and the scientific conference “Enhancement – cognitive, moral and mood” that the Centre for the Study of Bioethics (CBS) has organized with the University of Oxford.

He delivered a lecture at the Columbia University in New York in 2022, where he addressed challenges and opportunities for the Balkans and Europe due to the war in Ukraine and discussed his book, "A Critique of Global Ethics." Likewise, he has held lectures at other prestigious universities including University of Cambridge, Harvard University, LUMSA University, etc.

Dr Abazović was awarded with honorary doctorates for his leadership and contribution to the rule of law, promotion of peace and stability in the region by University Luarasi (Albania, 2021), Swiss UMEF (Switzerland, 2022), Mediterranean University of Albania (Albania, 2022), UNI Universum International College (Kosovo, 2023), Istanbul Medeniyet University (Turkey, 2023).

He is the recipient of Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, presented by the U.S. representative Nicole Malliotakis (2022), for his outstanding service, especially, fight against corruption and organized crime.

Among others, Abazović is head of the Bureau for Operational Coordination  (2021), Council for Combating Corruption (2021-2022), Council on Child Rights (2022), Council for National Security (2022), Rule of Law Council (2022), Public Administration Reform Council (2022), College for Negotiations on the Accession of Montenegro to the EU (2022), Council for NATO (2023), etc.

Since 2022 Dritan Abazović is the Prime Minister of Montenegro. Previously he has served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2020-2022. In 2012, he was the youngest Member of Parliament, and served as MP until 2020, when he was appointed to a new position.

In addition to Montenegrin, Mr. Abazović speaks fluently English and Albanian.
