Ibrahimović – Tajani: Italy strongly supports Montenegro in final stage of Its European path
Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović met in Trieste with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani. They discussed the final stage of Montenegro’s EU accession negotiations, bilateral relations and the stability of the Western Balkans.
DPM Ibrahimović thanked Italy for its continued political and expert support to Montenegro, particularly in the area of the rule of law, as well as for Minister Tajani’s personal engagement in keeping enlargement high on the European agenda.
“Montenegro is in the final stage of the negotiations, and we now need strong support from our partners to translate the reforms we have achieved into EU membership. We want to complete the process on the basis of results and with full consideration for the interests of the European Union,” Ibrahimović said.
Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s strong support for Montenegro’s European path, stating that Montenegro is ready for membership in the European Union and highlighting the need to accelerate the enlargement process in order to maintain momentum in the Western Balkans.
He stated that Montenegro’s membership in the EU would represent an important contribution to strengthening European security, while also emphasizing the strong ties between the two countries, including their shared NATO membership and their close connection across the Adriatic Sea.
Particular attention was devoted to the upcoming ministerial meeting of the Berlin Process, to be held in Montenegro on 1 October. Ibrahimović expressed his satisfaction that Tajani would participate in the meeting, as well as his expectation that Italy would also be represented at the Leaders’ Summit on 22 October.
The meeting confirmed the shared interest of Montenegro and Italy in continuing their close cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral formats, with Montenegro’s European integration and regional stability remaining key priorities.
