Ivanović meets with Keays: Strengthening Montenegro–U.S. cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović received today Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Montenegro Michael Keays for his introductory visit.

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović welcomed the temporary head of the diplomatic mission, expressing confidence that the strong partnership between Montenegro and the United States will continue to develop through open political dialogue and concrete joint initiatives.

The two officials emphasized that the bilateral relations between the two countries represent an example of stable and substantive partnership, based on strong political trust and intensive cooperation at all levels. Special attention was given to the progress in drafting an intergovernmental agreement between the two countries, with mutual confirmation of readiness to finalize and sign the document as soon as possible. It was noted that intensive work on this objective is already underway.

It was highlighted that Montenegro serves as a positive example of progress in the regional context, receiving praise for the results achieved in implementing reforms and encouragement to continue addressing remaining challenges.

The meeting also underscored the excellent cooperation in the field of defence and security. Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović expressed gratitude to the United States for its continuous support in strengthening the rule of law in Montenegro, particularly through expertise and support programmes aimed at enhancing the capacities of judicial institutions and the prosecution service.

The interlocutors further discussed the importance of enhancing economic cooperation, focusing on attracting credible American investors to the Montenegrin market. It was noted that the adoption of the aforementioned intergovernmental agreement would create additional opportunities for concrete investment projects, particularly in the areas of energy and infrastructure development.

The conversation also covered current global developments, including conflicts in the Middle East. Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović briefed Mr. Keays on specific measures taken by the Government of Montenegro to evacuate Montenegrin citizens from crisis areas, expressing hope for a prompt resolution of the conflicts, given the broader implications such crises can have on regional stability and global economic flows. 

Chargé d’Affaires Keays conveyed the U.S. State Department’s readiness to further enhance the partnership between the two countries in the upcoming period. Both officials also reviewed a number of issues of regional significance, confirming their mutual interest in maintaining close cooperation.
