Ivanović, Nikoloski: Improving transport connectivity and economic cooperation at the heart of Montenegro–North Macedonia relations

Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović met with Aleksandar Nikoloski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport of the Republic of North Macedonia, to discuss further strengthening bilateral relations, with a particular focus on transport connectivity, economic cooperation and the European prospects of the two countries.

The interlocutors agreed that relations between Montenegro and North Macedonia are very good and friendly, underpinned by ongoing political dialogue, while also offering scope for closer cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Particular attention was devoted to improving transport connectivity as a key prerequisite for strengthening economic ties, developing tourism and increasing trade between the two countries. In this context, they discussed establishing air links between Podgorica and Tivat and Skopje, as well as the potential for developing rail transport and enhancing regional infrastructure connectivity.

Ivanović stressed the importance of closer ties between businesses and more effective use of existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms, with a view to translating them into concrete projects.

The interlocutors also exchanged views on European integration, reaffirming that the progress of Western Balkan countries towards EU membership is of key importance for the stability, security and prosperity of the region. They highlighted the need to sustain reform efforts and strengthen regional cooperation, while maintaining a credible and predictable EU enlargement policy.

The meeting reaffirmed both sides’ readiness to continue open and constructive dialogue and to advance initiatives that will improve transport connectivity, strengthen economic ties and further develop the friendly relations between Montenegro and North Macedonia.
