Prime Minister Dritan Abazović and Minister of the Interior Filip Adžić attended the commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide in Potočari.

In these challenging and uncertain times, Montenegro aims to send a strong message of peace and solidarity. Prime Minister Abazović emphasised the importance of standing together and expressing solidarity with all the victims, ensuring that their suffering will never be forgotten. By attending this commemoration, Montenegro symbolically reiterates the necessity of never denying genocide and the liberating power of truth.

The Organising Committee, led by Deputy Mayor of Srebrenica Hamdija Fejzić, extended an invitation to Montenegro's highest officials to attend the commemoration on 11 July 2023 in Potočari. This will mark the third consecutive year that Prime Minister Dritan Abazović has attended the commemoration since assuming office.

Montenegro's presence at the 28th anniversary commemoration signifies the country's unwavering respect for the victims and dedication to ensuring lasting peace in the Western Balkans. It serves as a testament to Montenegro's condemnation of the Srebrenica genocide and all other war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia.

Montenegro's early adoption of the Declaration of Acceptance of the European Parliament's Resolution on the Srebrenica Commemoration in 2009, followed by the adoption of the Resolution on the Srebrenica Genocide in 2021, further demonstrates its commitment to justice and remembrance.

Montenegro has consistently shown its dedication to honoring the victims and their families by sending messages of peace and empathy.

The presence of Montenegro's government delegation at the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide's 28th anniversary holds immense significance. It represents a continuous display of respect for the victims and a commitment to ensuring lasting peace in the Western Balkans. By attending the event, Montenegro reaffirms its condemnation of the genocide, fostering reconciliation, and preventing the recurrence of such heinous crimes. Commemorations like these serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity, remembrance, and the pursuit of lasting peace in the face of past atrocities.
