Education is essential for the future; knowledge must also meet the needs of the economy

Prime Minister Milojko Spajić met with the Rector-elect of the University of Montenegro Irena Orović.

The current Vice-Rector has been elected to lead the University for the 2027–2030 term.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Spajić stressed that education is essential for the country’s future, particularly in the context of the profound changes brought about by modern technologies.

I am confident that, together with your team, you will successfully implement the Development Programme presented, bringing modernisation, improved teaching quality, greater competitiveness and enhanced recognition of our state university within the international academic community. At a time that is crucial for Montenegro, including in terms of its EU membership prospects, the University will play an important role and, I am confident, provide a strong impetus for the quality of further reform processes, the Prime Minister said.

Minister of Education, Science and Innovation Anđela Jakšić-Stojanović congratulated the incoming Rector on her election. The Government of Montenegro and the relevant Ministry enjoy excellent cooperation with the University of Montenegro. Judging by the topics we addressed at today’s meeting, and in the context of Montenegro’s ongoing EU accession process, we can expect even more intensive work in the coming period on projects that will help strengthen the University of Montenegro’s position within the European Research Area, the Minister said.

The key topic of the discussion was improving study programmes to ensure that students are prepared for a labour market that is changing faster than ever. It was concluded that programmes must be adapted to current needs.

We welcome the plans for the further development of the University of Montenegro and closer links between higher education and the needs of the economy, which were at the centre of today’s meeting. In the coming period, our focus will be on joint efforts to develop study programmes in business, business marketing and STEM disciplines, as well as short training, upskilling and reskilling programmes that would enable people to acquire modern, labour-market-relevant knowledge and skills more quickly, Orović said after the meeting.
