Spajić meets German Foreign Minister: We want Montenegro to be a European success story

Germany’s support remains unwavering
Prime Minister Milojko Spajić met with Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Johann Wadephul, who is visiting Podgorica today as part of his first tour of the region.
The Prime Minister informed Minister Wadephul about the Government’s activities aimed at closing all negotiating chapters by the end of 2026. He emphasised that Montenegro continues to demonstrate, through concrete and measurable steps, its readiness to become part of European structures, as also confirmed by the recent European Commission Report. We are maintaining the pace of reforms because we do not want any EU Member State to have even the slightest reservation when making a decision about Montenegro, the Prime Minister stressed.
Minister Wadephul expressed full support for Montenegro’s EU integration, highlighting Germany’s ongoing commitment to the enlargement of the European Union to the Western Balkans. We want Montenegro to be a successful enlargement story, the German Foreign Minister said.
The meeting underscored the importance of ensuring the independence of institutions, continuing the fight against organised crime, and maintaining the momentum of reforms. In this regard, the expert assistance of Germany – described by Minister Wadephul as unwavering – was particularly highlighted.
The Prime Minister also presented the Government’s ambitious agenda for the coming period, noting that in the year marking the 20th anniversary of the restoration of independence, Montenegro will chair the Berlin Process and the Western Balkans Fund, and host the EU–Western Balkans Summit.
Both sides agreed that political relations between the two countries are excellent, forming a strong basis for further development of economic cooperation. In this context, expectations were expressed that Lidl will soon become operational in Montenegro, while conditions are also being created to attract new German investments.
The meeting concluded with the joint assessment that both countries remain firmly committed to strengthening their strategic partnership, with the goal of advancing stability and ensuring continued progress on the region’s integration path.
