Spajić: Podgorica to get a modern waste-to-energy plant; Japanese giant Itochu shows interest

Montenegro will soon begin construction of its first centralized waste-to-energy incineration facility, which will enable the production of renewable energy and address municipal waste management in line with European standards.
This was announced by Prime Minister Milojko Spajić during a meeting with representatives of the Japanese company Itochu, which has extensive experience in the fields of energy and renewable energy sources.
Prime Minister Spajić stated that the plan is for a modern waste-to-energy facility to enable the production of up to 50 MW of renewable energy, while providing an environmentally sustainable solution to municipal waste management.
It was also announced at the meeting that a feasibility study for the waste-to-energy facility, covering the entire territory of Montenegro, is expected to be completed by the end of March.
The project would be implemented through a public-private partnership between the state and companies with relevant expertise in this field.
As highlighted, the construction of this facility would resolve a major issue for the Capital City, as well as for other parts of Montenegro, particularly in municipalities where the concentration of harmful particles exceeds permitted levels.
Representatives of the Japanese company Itochu expressed strong interest in potential cooperation on this project, noting that Montenegro has significant potential for developing modern solutions in waste management and renewable energy production. They emphasized their readiness to contribute to the realization of this important infrastructure project through the exchange of knowledge and experience.
