Visas

Citizens of Montenegro must own a visa in order to enter and stay in Australia. The issuance of visas is under the jurisdiction of the Australian Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia.

Bilateral Relations/Diplomatic Relations Overview

Montenegro and Australia foster quality bilateral relations, especially considering the presence of Montenegrin Diaspora on that continent.

Australia officially recognized Montenegro on the 27th of June 2006, and the diplomatic relations were established on the 1st of September 2006.

With the purpose of marking the 15th anniversary since the establishment of our diplomatic relations, the Embassy of Australia organized a photo-exhibition in the Modern Gallery of Podgorica, titled „Evolution – Torres Strait Masks“, which was open in the period of 2-18 September 2021.

H. E. Mr. Daniel Joseph Emery presented his credentials to President Đukanović on the 9th of November 2021, and is thus the current Ambassador of Australia in Montenegro (with residence in Belgrade, since October 2021). Previously, Ruth Caris Stewart took office of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia to Montenegro, with the residence in Belgrade, on the 19th of November 2018, and has performed the duty until September 2021.

Political Contacts

No official high-level meetings, or visits, have taken place since the establishment of bilateral relations. However, various meetings between Montenegro and Australia occured at the margins.

Economic Cooperation / International Trade

Overall exchange of goods and services in 2021 (January – October) amounted to €631,612 (out of which the exports were €114.715, and the imports were €516,897); Overall exchange of goods and services in 2020 amounted to €554.740 (out of which the imports were € €465.490, and the exports were €89,250).

FDI from Australia amounted to €1.089.740 in 2021, and €559.330 in 2020.

According to the data of „MONSTAT“ (Statistical Office of Montenegro), during the period of January - June 2021, 134 tourists from Australia paid visit to Montenegro and stayed for a total amount of 389 nights (collective accomodation). In 2020, Montenegro was visited by 457 tourists from Australia staying for a total amount of 3,495 nights.
