Bilateral relations/Diplomatic relations Overview

Montenegro and the Republic of India have been linked by traditionally friendly relations since the period of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Republic of India officially recognized Montenegro on August 2nd 2006, when diplomatic relations were established between the two countries.

The Ambassador of Montenegro to the Republic of India, on a non-resident basis based in Strasbourg, Zoran Janković, took office on March 13th 2019.

The Ambassador of the Republic of India to Montenegro, on a non-resident basis based in Vienna, Jaidip Mazumdar, took office on February 8th 2021.

The Consulate of Montenegro in the Republic of India, headed by Honorary Consul Janis Darbari, was opened on January 31st 2008.

Political contacts

State Minister for Foreign Affairs of India V. Kumar Singh visited Podgorica on September 3rd 2014, when he met with former President Filip Vujanovic, Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Luksic.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Milan Roćen was in India, from April 9-12th 2012 and, on that occasion, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India S. M. Krishna.

Contact was also established at the working level, between the finance departments in 2011.

Economic cooperation

The total trade between Montenegro and India in the period from January to November 2021 amounted to € 9,829,498 (of which imports amounted to € 9,482,645 and exports € 346,853 million), while in 2020 trade was realized in the amount of € 6,115,871 (of which imports amounted to € 6,115,841 and exports € 30), and in 2019 trade amounted to € 20,640,435, of which imports amounted to € 20,572,077 and exports to € 68,358 €) and in 2018 € 13,905,285 (of which imports amounted to € 13,904,439 and exports € 846).

No investments from India to Montenegro in the period 2013-2020 were registered, except in 2018 when € 868,000 was invested.

Montenegro's tourist traffic with India was symbolic, but there was growth until the appearance of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

Overview of other information

Within the ITEC technical and economic cooperation program, implemented by the Government of India, courses in various fields are being organized, in which Montenegrin civil servants also had the opportunity to participate. Montenegrin diplomats regularly attend courses for foreign diplomats organized by the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India.
