Visa regime

Nationals of Hungary may enter, pass through the territory of and stay in Montenegro up to 90 days, with a valid travel document, without a visa.

Nationals of Hungary may enter, pass through the territory of and stay in Montenegro up to 30 days, without a visa, with a valid identity card issued by the competent authority of Hungary.


Bilateral relations between Montenegro and Hungary are friendly, without open issues, on a constant rise when it comes to economic cooperation, characterized by common interests and cooperation through NATO membership. Numerous mutual visits at the highest and high level have additionally encouraged the overall cooperation between the two countries. Hungary strongly, bilaterally and multilaterally, advocates and promotes the necessity of Montenegro's membership in the European Union.

Diplomatic relations

Hungary officially recognized Montenegro on June 12, 2006. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on June 14, 2006.

Currently, the Embassy of Montenegro in Hungary is at the level of charge d'affaires a.i. until the appointment of a new ambassador.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to Montenegro is Mr. Jozsef Negyesi (assumed this duty on September 6, 2018).

The Honorary Consul of Hungary in Montenegro, based in Herceg Novi, is Mr. Csaba Magyar (assumed this duty on November 26, 2003).

High-level bilateral meetings

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Mr. Péter Szijjártó paid an official visit to Montenegro on May 5th 2021.

Hungarian Parliament Speaker Mr. Laszlo Kover paid an official visit to Montenegro from 10th-11th September 2018.

Prime Minister of Hungary Mr. Viktor Orbán paid an official visit to Montenegro on July 23rd 2018.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. Péter Szijjártó, paid an official visit to Montenegro on 12 May 2020, 2 July 2018 and 19 December 2017.

President of Hungary Mr. Janos Ader paid an official visit to Montenegro from 4th- 5th October 2017.

President of Montenegro Mr. Milo Đukanović paid an official visit to Hungary on May 11th 2021. 

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Mr. Đorđe Radulović paid an official visit to Hungary from 25th -27th February 2021.

President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr. Ivan Brajović paid an official visit to Hungary 12th -14th May 2019.

Prime Minister of Montenegro Mr. Duško Marković paid an official visit to Hungary on February 24th 2017.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Mr. Srđan Darmanović paid an official visit to Hungary on January 27th 2017. 

Economic indicators

In the period January-October 2021, trade exchange between Montenegro and Hungary amounted to 26,3 million euros (exports: 6,3 million euros; imports: 19,9 million euros). Total trade exchange in 2020 amounted to 44,39 million euros (exports: 22,51 million euros; imports: 21,88 million euros). 

In the period January-October 2021, the investments from Hungary amounted 2,4 million euros. Investments from Hungary in 2020 amounted to 7,62 million euros. 

In the period January-October 2021, Montenegro was visited by 9,214 tourists from Hungary, who spent 37,187 overnight stays. In 2020, Montenegro was visited by 1,251 tourists from Hungary, who spent 3,854 overnight stays.
