Visa regime

Nationals of South Africa are required to obtain a visa to enter Montenegro.

Visas may be obtained from diplomatic and consular posts of Montenegro. If you are unable to reach a diplomatic or consular post of Montenegro, you may apply for a visa at the nearest diplomatic or consular post of the Republic of Serbia.

Diplomatic Relations Overview

The Republic of South Africa officially recognized Montenegro on the 6th of July 2006, and the diplomatic relations were established on the 11th of October 2006. Mr. Ivan Leković presented his credentials to the President of South Africa H.E. Cyril Rapamhosa on the 15th of May 2019, thus officially taking office of the non-residential Ambassador of Montenegro to South Africa (with residence in Podgorica).

Mr. Vidoje Čavor is the Honorary Consul of Montenegro in the RSA (with residence in Durban).. The Consulate, with the jurisdiction over the entire territory of the receiving state, was officialy opened on the 30th of October 2019.

Agrément for the Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa, Mrs. Beryl Rose Sisulu, was granted during 2020, but the presentation of her credentials has been postponed due to the pandemic of the Coronavirus.

Economic Cooperation / International Trade

Economic cooperation between Montenegro and South Africa is mostly embodied in bilateral trade, while the “higher“ forms of cooperation haven't so far been recorded. South Africa has expressed interest in establishing the cooperation between the Chambers of Commerce of the two countries.

Overall exchange of goods and services in 2020 (January - June) amounted to €466,038 (out of which the exports were €34, and the imports were €466,004); overall exchange in 2019 was €2,052,750 (exports - €66, imports - €2,052,684); overall exchange in 2018 totaled €5,189,492 (exports - altogether €1,084, imports €5,188,408); overall exchange in 2017 was €2,075,084 (exports – €13,610, imports €2,061,474); overall exchange in 2016 was €1,416,929 (exports - €12,764, imports €1,404,165); overall exchange in 2015 amounted to €1,206,751 (exports - €0€, imports €1,206,751).

Direct investments (FDI) from South Africa in 2016 amounted to €15,012,340. In 2018, the FDI totaled €6,113,180€, while in 2019 they were €624,790.

Miscellaneous

Agreement on Abolition of Visas for Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports is currently in the process of harmonization.
