Visa regime

Nationals of Sweden may enter, pass through the territory of and stay in Montenegro up to 90 days, with a valid travel document, without a visa.

Nationals of Sweden may enter, pass through the territory of and stay in Montenegro up to 30 days, without a visa, with a valid identity card issued by the competent authority of Sweden.


Political relations between Montenegro and Sweden are friendly and are based on the principles of openness, cooperation in many areas and support, especially in the field of European integration. 

Diplomatic relations

Sweden recognized the independence of Montenegro on June 14th 2006 and diplomatic relations were established on June 26th 2006.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Sweden to Montenegro, based in Belgrade, is Ms. Annika Ben David (she took office on December 9th 2021).

Official visits

Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden Ms. Ann Linde visited Montenegro as OSCE Chairperson-in-Office on May 26th 2021.

President of Parliament of the Kingdom of Sweden Mr. Urban Olin paid an official visit to Montenegro from February 25th-26th 2015.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro Mr. Igor Lukšić paid an official visit to Sweden on March 5th 2013.

President of Parliament of Montenegro Mr. Ranko Krivokapić paid an official visit to Sweden from December 14th-16th 2011.

Economic indicators    

In 2021, investments from Sweden amounted to 10.1 million euros. In 2020, investments from Sweden amounted to 4.76 million euros. In 2019, investments from Sweden amounted to 4.4 million euros. In 2018, investments from Sweden amounted to 9.6 million euros. 

Until November 2021, trade with Sweden amounted to 15.7 million euros (exports 1.9 million euros; imports 13.8 million euros). In 2020, trade with Sweden amounted to 15.2 million euros (exports 2.4 million euros; imports 12.8 million euros). In 2019, trade with Sweden amounted to 18.8 million euros (exports 3.1 million euros; imports 15.7 million euros). In 2018, trade with Sweden amounted to 27.99 million euros (exports 3.47 million euros; imports 24.52 million euros).

Until October 2021, Montenegro was visited by 3,740 tourists from Sweden who spent 14,176 nights. In 2020, Montenegro was visited by 3,461 tourists from Sweden who spent 11,545 nights. In 2019, Montenegro was visited by 31,239 tourists from Sweden, who spent 87,145 nights. In 2018, Montenegro was visited by 29,243 tourists from Sweden, who spent 173,652 nights.
