Montenegro and the Republic of Korea are developing traditionally friendly relations.

Diplomatic Relations

On June 21, 2006, the Government of the Republic of Korea recognized the independence of Montenegro. Diplomatic relations were established on September 4, 2006.

On February 8, 2019, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea on a non-resident basis (based in Belgrade) Choe Hyoung-chan presented his credentials to the President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović.

Until the appointment of the new Ambassador of Montenegro to the Republic of Korea, on a non-resident basis (based in Beijing), the function of the temoprarily Chargé d'Affaires is performed by Damir Šabanović, First Secretary at the Embassy of Montenegro in Beijing.

On January 26, 2015, Predrag Pavličić was issued an exequatur in the capacity of Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in Montenegro, with its seat in Podgorica and with a consular area on the entire territory of Montenegro.

Political Contacts

In May 2012, the Vice President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Hong Jae Hyong paid his first official visit to Montenegro. On that occasion, he had a meeting with the President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Ranko Krivokapić

Economic Cooperation / International Trade

Foreign trade between Montenegro and the Republic of Korea, in the period January - November 2020, amounted to 9,694,985 € (of which imports amounted to  9,379,163 € and exports to 297,822 €). No direct investments from the Republic of Korea were recorded during 2020.

According to the data of "Monstat", in 2020, there were 154 tourists from the Republic of Korea in Montenegro, who realized 293 overnight stays.

Miscellaneous

The procedure related to the conclusion of the Agreement between the Government of Montenegro and the Government of the Republic of Korea on economic cooperation is underway. The agreement will enable the intensification of cooperation in specific economic areas marked as mutually beneficial, thus establishing an adequate legal basis. These specific economic areas are: industry, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, energy, transport, shipbuilding, construction industry, environmental protection, tourism, investment promotion, small and medium enterprises, IT technologies, training in areas of common interest, as well as other areas.

A delegation of the Korean Importers Association (KOIMA) (President Jutae Lee, Executive Director of KOIMA Herbert Lee and KOIMA Representative for the Balkans Alexander Kuleshov) paid a working visit to Montenegro at the end of June 2012. On that occasion, in the Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro (PKCG), a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between KOIMA and PKCG.

The Korean Business Center (KOTRA) was officially opened in Serbia on December 16, 2015 ("KOTRA Serbia" also covers Montenegro). The main goal of the "KOTRA" center is to explore new opportunities for cooperation in the fields of trade and investment. The mentioned agency focuses on results and is partially under the jurisdiction of the state, which makes it business and practical.

Donations of the Republic of Korea in 2020

In mid-June 2020, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea delivered 1,000 PCR tests for the corona virus (donated by a Korean corporation) to the Institute of Public Health of Montenegro.

The Government of the Republic of Korea, tough its international cooperation and humanitarian assistance, donated to the Government of Montenegro 277,000 protective masks (type "KF94"), worth $ 200,000. The masks were delivered to "Montefarm" – as the user of the donation.

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea donated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro three passenger motor vehicles "Hyundai" (two "Elantra" and one "Tuscon"), in the total value of € 45,851.23.
