Montenegro and the Kingdom of Spain have traditionally good relations that were established during the Principality of Montenegro. During the Balkan wars, in 1912 and 1913, Major Emilio Toro, the military attaché of the Kingdom of Spain in Montenegro, stayed in Cetinje. At that time, Montenegro had established consular relations with Spain. Montenegro and the Kingdom of Spain have good and friendly bilateral cooperation. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries signed the Political Declaration on Bilateral Relations on May 19, 2011 in Madrid.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

The Kingdom of Spain recognized Montenegro on 16 June 2006. Diplomatic relations were established on 12 December 2006.  Montenegro is currently represented in Spain at the level of charge d'affaires  Ms. Aleksandra Đaković.

The non - resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain to Montenegro, based in Belgrade, is Raúl Bartolomé Molina.

OFFICIAL VISITS

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Milan Roćen paid an official visit to Spain on May 19, 2011. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Miguel Angel Moratinos, paid an official visit to Montenegro on April 21, 2010.

ECONOMIC INDICATORS

During 2020, foreign trade amounted to EUR 44.60 million (imports 43.67 million; exports 0.93 million) In 2019, foreign trade with Spain amounted to EUR 49.39 million (imports 48.22 million; exports 1.17 million). In 2018, foreign trade was predominantly related to imports from Spain (44.33 million), while exports were 0.53 million. During 2020, foreign direct investment from Spain amounted to 6.48 million euros. In 2019, investments from Spain amounted to 5.45 million euros, while in 2018 they amounted to 7.63, and in 2017 to 16.5 million euros.

In 2019, Montenegro was visited by 9,527 tourists from Spain, who spent 20,157 nights. During 2018, 6,554 Spanish tourists visited Montenegro, who realized 14,461 overnight stays, in 2017 - 6,155 tourists, 16,741 overnight stays.
