Support to the first Centre of Excellence in Montenegro – BIO-ICT in the total value of EUR 358,000 will be provided through the Country Programming Framework for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development.

In the next five-year period, the activities envisaged by the Programming Framework will be implemented in Montenegro, which have, with the signing of this document between Montenegro and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, been planned in the sphere of science and research.

The aim of support to the first Centre of Excellence in Montenegro, totalling EUR 358,000, is to strengthen the commercialization of research, national capacities in the field of knowledge and technology transfer and the commercialization of innovative solutions.

It is expected that the project will contribute to the strengthening of human resources and technical capacities, improving the technology transfer between scientific research institutions and the economic sector (industry), as well as the commercialization of innovative technological solutions developed by the science and research sector.

In accordance with the development priorities of Montenegro in the field of science and the results achieved so far in the work of the first Centre of Excellence in Montenegro, the project activities will focus on the sectors of agriculture, ecology, health and information-communication technologies.

The 2017-2021 Country Programming Framework for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development of Montenegro focuses on three priority areas:

- strengthening industrial competitiveness;
- boosting rural development and job creation; and
- environmental management and sustainable energy.

The above project will be implemented within the first thematic area – segment related to strengthening the links between the research sector and the economy. The dynamics of the project work and the details of the project activities will be known after the UNIDO expert mission, expected in Montenegro in early March 2018.

UNIDO is a United Nations Industrial Development Organization based in Vienna, the Republic of Austria, which promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. Through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the mission of this Organization has been recognized as “building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation”.

Montenegro renewed its full membership in UNIDO on 22 November 2006.
