Abazović: Montenegro sets an example in inclusivity

Published on: Oct 7, 2023 5:15 AM Author: Office of the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Dritan Abazović, speaking at the 6th School of Political Studies Forum on "Inclusion and Diversity - Minority Rights in the Process of European Integration" held at the University of Montenegro, emphasized that Montenegro is an inclusive society that can set an example for the region in respecting differences. He stressed that although progress has been made, the work is far from complete, and efforts to eliminate differences, especially when they hinder human rights and progress, should continue.

Prime Minister Abazović pointed out that Montenegro stands out in the region as the only country that no longer considers issues related to minority nations and other groups with differences, including the LGBT population, as significant problems. This change is attributed to Montenegro's achievement of a level where such issues are generally accepted by the majority of its people, and resistance has significantly diminished. While there may still be opposition on social media, in public discourse, or from a few irresponsible politicians, these views do not represent the broader Montenegrin society.

The Prime Minister highlighted significant steps, such as having a Prime Minister from a minority nation, a diverse government composition, and the successful organization of events without major tensions, even in high-risk situations. He viewed these achievements as passing the initial inclusivity test.

However, Prime Minister Abazović likened Montenegro's progress to passing the first year of an inclusivity course. There is more work ahead to further develop inclusivity and completely remove barriers to the exercise of rights and overall progress. This involves not eliminating specific identities but ensuring that differences do not hinder individuals from enjoying their rights and contributing to progress.
