Prime Minister Dritan Abazović sent a letter of support to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Dear Mr. President,

In this difficult time for Ukraine and the entire Europe, allow me, first of all, to offer my sincere condolences for the suffering and loss of a large number of lives of innocent Ukrainian citizens.

With your immeasurable courage and dignity, your people and you personally amaze the whole world every day. In this brutal and unprovoked madness of war, Ukraine is defending against aggression not only its homeland but also the whole of Europe, as well as the democratic values and norms of civilization which are the bedrock of the modern world.

While protecting your country, honor and dignity, you and the Ukrainian citizens have shown that the European Union is much more than 27 member states and that it can and must defend itself outside its current borders. That is why, among other things, Montenegrin citizens stand firmly with their Ukrainian friends, which we prove every day by accepting refugees from war-torn areas, who have found a safe haven in Montenegro.

Montenegro, as a candidate country for EU membership, which has advanced the most in the negotiations, is committed to merit-based accelerated accession. Enlargement policy is one of the most successful policies of the European Union and we want it to remain so. In addition, we are fully aligned with the Common Foreign and Security Policy and have uncompromisingly accepted all restrictive measures and sanctions against the Russian Federation as a sign of unreserved support for the European Union in defending our civilizational values.

Montenegro supports the intentions and wishes of Ukraine to get the candidate status for membership in the European Union, and we hope that it will succeed in that. We are available to share our practical experience in the negotiation process in the way that is most suitable to you.

In accordance with the aforementioned, I believe that our telephone conversation would contribute to identifying further opportunities to provide support of the Government of Montenegro, a NATO member that contributes to the global security and safety.

Please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.

Dritan Abazović PhD
