Deputy Prime Minister Jelena Borovinić Bojović said today that special libraries play a particularly important role in building a society in which everyone has the right to knowledge, education and equal participation.

Borovinić Bojović made the remarks at the roundtable discussion “Special Libraries in Montenegro: Common Challenges and Development Prospects”, organised by the Historical Institute of Montenegro on the occasion of International Literacy Day.

When we talk about special libraries, particularly those intended for people with visual and hearing impairments, we are first and foremost talking about people, their rights, needs and dignity, Borovinić Bojović said.

She stressed that the pursuit of a more inclusive, fairer and more advanced society means ensuring that the right to knowledge, books and information is accessible to everyone. She emphasised that special libraries are not merely places where books are kept, but spaces that open the doors to knowledge and education, while enabling greater independence and equal participation in society for those who, until recently, had more limited access to reading.

It is important to me that you know that you have a partner and interlocutor in the Government of Montenegro who wants to hear your needs and work with you to find solutions, the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Speaking about the importance of joint action, Borovinić Bojović recalled the words of Helen Keller: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Let this meeting be an opportunity for us to listen to one another, connect and take concrete steps towards a society in which no one will feel that knowledge is inaccessible or that they have been left on the sidelines because of their differences, Borovinić Bojović said.

She thanked the staff of special libraries for their work, dedication and humanity, stressing that their shared goal is to create a more accessible, inclusive and humane society.
