Spajić in Berlin: Our driving licences will be recognised in Germany

Prime Minister Milojko Spajić today, in Berlin, signed on behalf of Montenegro a Joint Declaration of Intent on Procedures for the Mutual Recognition of Driving Licences, resolving a long-standing issue affecting the Montenegrin diaspora in Germany.

Our driving licences will be recognised in Germany. It is a great honour for me to be in a position to sign the Declaration on the mutual recognition of driving licences, which resolves a decades-long problem. I am grateful to Berlin for placing this issue on the agenda in a relatively short period of cooperation with our Government, allowing our citizens in Germany to enter the new year with good news, Prime Minister Spajić stated.

He noted that this represents another friendly gesture by Germany towards Montenegro, confirming the strength of bilateral relations, and emphasized that Germany has repeatedly proven in recent years to be a true friend of Montenegro and a leader that countries like Montenegro can look up to and rely on – especilly in the process of European integration, under whose strong leadership Montenegro is meeting the conditions for full-fledged membership by 2028.

On the German side, the declaration was signed by the Federal Minister of Transport of the Federal Republic of Germany, Patrick Schnieder, who said that the signing of the agreement represents a significant moment for both countries and their citizens.

This arrangement is another step on the path of our steadily growing partnership. It shows that we can find joint solutions that are pragmatic, forward-looking and responsive to our citizens' needs, Schnieder stated.

Although a legislative procedure remains to be initiated in the first quarter of next year, the two officials expressed expectations that, following a recommendation by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, the implementation of this measure across all German federal states will enter into force as soon as possible.
