PM Marković meets with Pensioners' Association delegation: Government is committed to improvement of pensioners’ financial standing

Podgorica, Montenegro (22 January 2020) -- The Government is committed to the continuous improvement of the position of pensioners and it will continue to support the oldest population through numerous financial, legislative and other activities, which will be implemented and in co-operation with the Pensioners' Association, it was concluded at the meeting of Prime Minister Duško Marković and the Association delegation - President of the Pensioners' Association Branko Vešović and Vice Presidents Ilija Stanišić and Ivan Krsmanović.

"As a responsible Government, we have a particular sensibility towards pensioners. We understand the needs of this population and we will find a way to provide a quality response to them, taking care not to compromise the stability of public finances and therefore, the regularity and security of pensions and other benefits," Prime Minister Marković stated.

He expressed satisfaction with the numerous successfully implemented activities of the Pensioners' Association, which has about 101,500 members, aimed at improving the material and social position of this population. The Government allocates significant financial resources to the social program of the pensioners, each year. 

In addition to the allocation of almost EUR 100 million to the PIO Fund, to ensure the payment of pensions, the Government allocated EUR 600,000 last year for the assistance program to pensioners with lowest income, while providing over EUR half a million for subsidizing vacations and recoveries. The Government allocated around EUR 300,000 to procure winter supplies under more favourable conditions, and EUR 32,000 to retirement clubs. Also, the reconstruction of the Ulcinj resort was completed last year, for which the Government allocated EUR 2, 6 million.

"We are extremely respectful of all that you do for Montenegrin pensioners. None of the pensioners in the region has this kind of assistance and cooperation with the Government," Vešović stated. 

Although the average pension is the highest in the region, after Slovenia and Croatia, both sides agreed on the importance of continuous working to the creation of preconditions for improvement of the financial position of pensioners. In the upcoming period, particular focus will also be placed on housing issues, praising the fact that 561 apartments were built for the oldest population, in the previous period. 

The meeting agreed on the continuation of regular communication with Prime Minister Marković and the involvement of representatives of the Association to the Government's economic and social bodies.
