Prime Minister Dritan Abazović and Coordinator of the Ministry of European Affairs Ana Novaković Đurović met Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić in Strasbourg.

Montenegro remains firmly committed to the fundamental standards and values of the Council of Europe and recognises them as a priority in its activities at the national level, said Prime Minister Abazović, citing the successful cooperation between the Council of Europe and Montenegro.

Abazović expressed satisfaction that Montenegro and the CoE Secretary General share the same priorities in the area of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

The Prime Minister pointed out that Montenegro, as a country that cherishes a multi-ethnic, multi-confessional and multicultural identity and heritage, is firmly committed to and strives for the full implementation of the set standards in the areas of respect for the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms, noting that our country will continue to respect and protect human rights and lead a strong anti-discriminatory policy protecting vulnerable categories.

The meeting highlighted that the Council of Europe's expertise and monitoring is not only important for improving national standards, but also for fulfilling Montenegro's most important foreign policy goal – EU membership.

The officials agreed that all efforts towards these goals, with the wholehearted support of the Council of Europe, contribute to the strengthening of our democratic processes and institutions and the implementation of our obligations towards the Council of Europe.
