Europe Now Programme is already yielding results

Published on: Jan 28, 2022 12:30 PM Author: Ministry of Economic Development

The "Europe Now" reform programme is the greatest success of this Government, which through its activities in just one year, and after a difficult period that Montenegro went through, managed to preserve the economy and health, it was assessed at today's working breakfast of Minister of Health Jelena Borovinić Bojović, Minister of Economic Development Jakov Milatović, Minister of Finance and Social Welfare Milojko Spajić, and journalists.

Minister Spajić said that Montenegro, as a service economy that is dependent on tourism, fought hard to recover the economy, improve employment figures, preserve the health of citizens and keep them in the country through the "Europe Now" programme.

A large part of the work has already been completed, we have a reform project and the payments of increased January salaries have begun, said Minister Spajić.

Minister Borovinić Bojović emphasised that "Europe Now" should come to life after they have been convincing us for 30 years that it cannot be better than it is: "That is not true and we have all proved it together".

Minister Milatović emphasised that this is only the first step that will benefit all citizens.

When this Government began its mandate, the public debt amounted to 3.7 billion euros. Only in 2020, we paid the interest that was needed to build one Clinical Centre in Podgorica, Milatović said.

He pointed out that during 2021, numerous events followed which turned things around completely.

We have turned the economic downturn into economic growth, we have turned the collapse of tourism into a recovery of tourism, we have turned unsustainable public finances into sustainable ones, we were one of the few countries in the world to reduce its public debt this pandemic year. We have reduced the budget deficit to a historical minimum of about 2% of GDP and finally made the first step for the citizens of Montenegro to live better - through the creation, coordination and implementation of the Europe Now programme, Milatović said.
