Ivanović meets with Apostolic Nuncio: Dialogue on the establishment of an Apostolic Nunciature in Podgorica continued

Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović met today with the Apostolic Nuncio to Montenegro, Archbishop Francis Assisi Chullikatt, who on this occasion presented Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović with a Draft Agreement between Montenegro and the Holy See on the establishment of an Apostolic Nunciature in Podgorica.

The interlocutors assessed that the process of establishing an Apostolic Nunciature in Podgorica represents a strong indication of the quality and stability of relations between Montenegro and the Holy See, as well as their shared commitment to further developing these relations. In this context, the Apostolic Nuncio also referred to the broader international framework, noting that, in addition to Montenegro, the opening of new nunciatures is planned in several other countries.

Views were also exchanged on current international developments, with particular attention paid to the role of the Holy See in contemporary global circumstances. The interlocutors reflected on the activities of the Pope and his contribution to international dialogue, as well as to the promotion of peace, solidarity and mutual understanding amid heightened global challenges, underscoring the importance of the moral authority of the Holy See in international relations.

Special attention was devoted to Montenegro’s European integration. The Apostolic Nuncio expressed interest in Montenegro’s progress towards membership in the European Union, while Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović presented ongoing and planned activities within the accession negotiation process. He emphasized that Montenegro remains committed to the implementation of reforms and to a merit-based approach, expressing confidence that such an approach constitutes the key framework for further progress in the European integration process.

Today’s visit represents the continuation of several months of dialogue and coordination between the two sides regarding the Draft Intergovernmental Agreement on the establishment of an Apostolic Nunciature in Podgorica, and confirms the mutual readiness to continue discussions on this matter in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
