Veljko Milonjić

Director General of Directorate General for Multilateral Relations and International Legal Affairs

Veljko Milonjic was born in Podgorica, Montenegro on June 18th 1978. While Elementary, Junior and Junior High School attended in Montenegro, in 1997 he graduated from High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. Upon his return to Montenegro, he entered Law University of Montenegro where, in 2002 he graduated, specializing International relations (average grade 8,65 out of 10,00). In 2008 he received the High Honour Fellowship from George Washington University and in 2010 he obtained Master of International Policy and Practice from GWU’s Elliot School of International Affairs (GPA 3,85).

Since 2016 he is a PhD candidate at the Catholic University of Eichstatt – Ingolstadt, Germany. Veljko also attended numerous seminars and courses in the field of international affairs, EU policies, international law and security, protocol and diplomatic skills. (Diplomatic Academy of Montenegro 2003/04, Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Austria 2006). He also successfully accomplished special training for perspective leaders organized by Harvard’s John Kennedy school for international relations (Kokkalis Programme).

Veljko started his professional career shortly after graduating from University, in April 2003 as stagier in the Ministry for International Economic Relations and European Integration of Montenegro, where later he became junior adviser. In late 2004 till 2007 he was employed in the cabinet of the minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro as minister’s personal secretary/aid.  From 2007 to 2010 he was appointed as a First Secretary in the Embassy of Montenegro to the United States. In the fall of 2010 he briefly worked as an adviser in the Diplomatic Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when, in the beginning of 2011 he transferred to the Ministry of Finance where, until fall of 2012 he worked as an adviser to the Minister of finance, and was in charge of international bilateral relations and communication with international financial organisations.

At the end of 2012 he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a director of the Directorate for consular affairs until May of 2013 when he departed for Munich to serve as a Consul General in Bayern, Germany. In the summer of 2017 when his mandate ended he took over the position of director of the Directorate for the Americas within the Directorate General for Bilateral Affairs. After a year at that position he became director General of the Directorate General for Economic, Cultural Diplomacy and International Development Cooperation.

In July of 2019, Veljko Milonjic was appointed first as an acting, later as a director general in the Directorate General for Multilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, his current position.

He is an alumnus of the George Washington University. As a student (1997 -2001) he was a member of the Association of young ecologists of Montenegro. He is fluent in English and communicates in German and Italian and has active computer skills.

He is married and the father of two children.
